چکیده

The length and complexity of a linear equalizer filter is highly dependent on the nature of the channel effects it must mitigate. The governing design rules are typically stated in terms of the channel's temporal characteristics, i.e. impulse response duration. Equalizer implementational complexity is a principal limiting factor for high bandwidth data communication applications, and consequently there is motivation for reexamining accepted design guidelines. Recently, it was demonstrated in [1] that for relatively benign conditions on the effective channel and transmitter pulse shaping, there exists a linear equalizer that perfectly mitigates intersymbol interference, and whose span matches that of the composite distortion. Our paper examines the implications of the minimal-length equalizer in light of accepted design rules, and shows that a tangible loss in performance can be assigned to this complexity reduction. Actual line-of-sight microwave radio channels are used to demonstrate the nature of the performance loss.

Frequency-domain equalizers with zero restoration for zero-padded block transmission with high SNR

This paper focuses on the equalization of block transmissions with zero pad (ZP). If the channel impulse response length does not exceed the ZP length, it is possible to construct zero-forcing equalizers (ZFEs). Improved performance may be achieved using a minimummean squared error (MMSE) equalizer. However, these equalizers are computationally intensive when a time-domain implementation is use...

Diversity Order of Infinite-length Symbol-by-symbol Linear Equalization

The processing complexity of optimal receivers in frequency selective channels grows exponentially with the channel memory length. Linear receivers, alternatively, offer significantly less complexity with the cost of performance degradation. Such degradation can be due to not fully capturing the inherent frequency diversity or degraded coding gain. In this paper we investigate how effectively t...

On the Practical Aspects of Joint Passive Phase Conjugation and Equalization Underwater Communication Systems

Underwater acoustic communication systems suffer from the channel impairments which results in time spreading of the transmitted signal. In underwater environment, multiple replicas of the transmitted signal are received at the receiver through different paths, which causes significant Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI). Decision Feedback Equalizers (DFE) was utilized to overcome this type of inte...

Variable Length Per Tone Equalizers for Multicarrier Systems

Per tone equalization was recently proposed as an alternative equalization structure for multicarrier systems. In this paper we propose two NLMS based variable length per tone equalization algorithms. In the first algorithm, the number of equalizer taps used in every subchannel is determined according to channel conditions which results in a reduction in equalization complexity. While the secon...

Unbiased MMSE vs. Biased MMSE Equalizers

We systematically analyze the biased and unbiased minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizers of finite as well as infinite length, with and without decision feedback sections. New closed-form expressions of optimum equalizer weights, the MMSE, and symbol error probabilities (SEP), solely in terms of channel response parameters and noise power, are derived for the above receivers. These new exp...
